Week 1 Dev Log: Sep. 20 - Sep. 24


Dates: Sep. 20 - Sep 24

Decisions:

  • Developed initial idea for the game
  • Finalised idea on core mechanics
    • Jump / Movement
    • Collecting letters
    • Spelling words to spawn objects
  • Decided on general backstory / concept for the game

Obstacles / Things to Consider:

  • General Theme
    • How are we going to want the game / assets to look
  • Are intro puzzles accessible enough for a tutorial level?
  • Hit detection
    • Did not work with some assets, need to fix soon
  • How to design future levels? Concerns about the variety of words?

Progress:

  • Implemented rough initial build in game jam on saturday with core mechanics
    • Can collect letters
    • Can spell words to spawn limited objects
    • Can solve initial puzzle to squash bug
  • Incorporated a variety of different visual assets
    • pencil character
    • spider enemy
    • collectible letters
  • Incorporated different music / sound effects
    • Included general theme while playing
    • Included sound effects for bug squash and letter collecting

Next Steps:

  • Determine what can be used from the game jam for this level
  • Decide on a consistent theme and modify / create new assets (sound / art)
  • Texture more portions of the level (i.e. walls/floors)
  • Develop ideas for other levels / expanding current level
  • Re-haul inventory system for letters 
    • Find a way to show “where a puzzle is”
    • Restrict word length of puzzle answers and extend assets (to allow for more creative freedom for players)
  • Implement controller movement
